Denture Relining Service

Over time, the shape of your gums and the bones that support the dentures can change. This means the dentures may no longer fit properly. Relining is a method of adjusting the internal part of the base of the dentures with an acrylic resin to correct their fit. This technique doesn’t alter the appearance of the dentures; it simply adapts the base to suit the changing shape of your gums.

What the Process Involves

  • Removing some of the plastic from the fitting surface of your denture
  • Placing a layer of soft impression material onto this trimmed surface
  • Re-positioning inside your mouth to take an impression of your gums
  • Using this accurate impression to create a new hard or soft base

Our denture relining service in Hobart is a practical and effective procedure that can significantly improve your quality of life for eating and talking. A well-fitted denture to your current mouth is more likely to be comfortable for hours of wear and far less likely to fall out from everyday tasks. Whether your dentures are beginning to feel like the wrong shape, or it’s just been a while since your last check, here are some advantages of relining:

  • A comfortable fit that’s less noticeable when eating or talking
  • Reduced risk of friction sore or pain from ill-fitting dentures
  • A proper fit that makes everyday activities easier
  • Less chance of your dentures falling out, leading to less accidental damage

Relining Allows The Fit Of Your Dentures

Denture relining allows the fit of your dentures to be improved, eliminating the need to replace them with a new set. They will fit much more securely, so you won’t have to worry about them falling out or moving when you speak and eat.

Relining also helps the dentures to last longer and improves your oral hygiene, as food is less likely to become trapped under your dentures. This can happen when dentures are too loose.

In many cases, patients no longer need to use denture adhesive. If you’d like to discover the right solution for your needs, contact our Hobart denture clinic today.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How often should I clean my dentures?

It’s important to regularly remove plaque from your dentures, as unclean dentures can lead to problems such as bad breath, gum disease, tooth decay and oral thrush.

Clean your dentures as often as you would your normal teeth (at least every morning and night), by:

    • Brushing them with paste before soaking to remove food particles
    • Soaking the dentures in a fizzy solution of denture-cleaning tablets to remove stains and bacteria—follow the manufacturer’s instructions & do not soak them overnight
    • Brushing them again, as you would your normal teeth (but don’t scrub too hard)
  • What type of food should I eat when wearing dentures?

When you first start wearing dentures, you should eat soft foods cut into small pieces and chew slowly, using both sides of your mouth. Avoid chewing gum and any food that is very sticky, hard or sharp-edged. You can gradually start to eat other types of food until you are back to your old diet. Never use toothpicks.

  • How do I maintain oral hygiene when wearing dentures?

Keeping your mouth clean is just as important as ever when you wear dentures. You should brush your remaining teeth, gums and tongue every morning and evening to prevent tooth decay, gum disease and other dental problems.

  • Do you offer same-day relining?

If your current dentures are causing you discomfort, getting in touch with our team is the ideal place to start. We can book you in as soon as possible for a same-day relining service, allowing you to leave our clinic with a better fit and higher level of comfort.

Types of Dental Relines

SOFT RELINES

Soft liners are made from a flexible silicone material and may need to be re-done every year. They are used if the mouth cannot tolerate a hard denture base and are far more common in the lower jaw.

HARD RELINES

Hard relines are a permanent solution compared to a soft reline. They are made from the same material as the denture base. A hard reline will usually be used if your mouth is healthy and can support a new denture base.
